A guide to the county
Caraș-Severin
in five.
A short guide to Caraș-Severin County: in every town, five places to explore, five to eat and five to stay. Chosen by people, not algorithms.
Towns
We started with the towns where we found good places in all three categories. More will follow as we check them.
ReșițaThe iron town of the Banat Mountains, with its steam locomotive museum, Constantin Lucaci's kinetic fountain and a zoo in the woods.
BocșaThe long town on the Bârzava, where some of the first blast furnaces in the Banat worked from 1719, with the ruins of a medieval castle and the monastery at the spring in the Godinova valley.
AninaThe miners' town in the Anina Mountains, end of the mountain railway from Oravița, with Shaft I opened as a museum in 2026 and Lake Buhui in the forest.
CaransebeșThe old town of the Banat border guards, with a museum in their barracks, the churches of the centre and the Roman ruins of Tibiscum on the edge of town.
OravițaThe town of Romania's first railway station, where the train climbs the mountain line to Anina, with the Black Eagle pharmacy in the old centre and Călugăra Monastery in the Ciclova valley.
Băile HerculaneThe thermal spa in the Cerna valley, with Hercules Square and its Habsburg baths, caves right above the streets and trails up to Domogled.Photo: Reșița: Eddy Renard / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 · Bocșa: Genudoc / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 ro · Anina: Strainu / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 ro · Caransebeș: Turbojet / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 · Oravița: Strainu / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 ro · Băile Herculane: Pasztilla aka Attila Terbócs / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Pocket guide
A weekend ahead?
The guide comes along.
Every town in one PDF: all the places in the guide, with opening hours, phone numbers and a town map. It opens without internet too.
Why only five?
- Five helps you choose.A list of 40 restaurants leaves the searching to you. Five means we already chose.
- Every place has a reason. Each entry says in one line why it made the list.
- Different places, not clones. We pick places that are not alike, so everyone finds what suits them.
- The list changes, it doesn't grow. When a place comes in, another goes out. We review the selection regularly.
