About the place
Coal has been mined at Anina since 1792. Work on the present Shaft I began on 2 April 1874, and the steam winding engine was built in 1909. The Anina mine reached a depth of about 1,240 m, the deepest in Banat. The complex is a class A listed monument.
The museum opened on 14 July 2026. The tour goes through rooms on extraction, transport, the lamp room, minerals and the winding engine, then up the headframe, where you look over the town from about 25 m. Reviews praise the guides and their stories about the miners.
