About the place
The cave is on the right bank of the Cerna, behind Hotel Roman, at the northern end of the resort. A long stone staircase leads up to the entrance. It is about 143 metres long and a listed archaeological site (CS-I-s-B-10772): finds show settlement in the Epipalaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Hallstatt, Daco-Roman period and Middle Ages, including Roman pottery and coins.
Visitors' inscriptions cover the walls; the oldest dated one is said to be from 1820. There is no lighting. The entrance has an iron gate opened by a warden, and some visitors report that it can be closed on quiet days.
Good to know
- Bring a torch: there is no electric light in the cave.
- Wear shoes with good grip: steps and floor can be wet.
- The Steam Grotto and Terasa Baitz are in the same area, north of Hercules Square.
