About the place
The monastery is in the Ciclova valley, about 2 km east of Ciclova Montană village, which belongs to Oravița. It was founded in 1859 on the site of an old hermit's cell, in a cave that became the altar. The church was built in 1860–1861 and completed in 1862; it is a listed monument.
It is dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God, celebrated on 1 October. Springs run down the slopes around it, and the courtyard has a fountain called the Healing Spring. Above the monastery rises the Piatra Rolului rock, tied to local legends.
