About the place
Tradition and documents link the site to a monastery recorded in 1444, beside which the first school for deacons in the Banat mountains operated. Today's masonry church, in Baroque style, was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century (the list of monuments gives 1739), repaired in 1759 and enlarged in the early 19th century. The iconostasis was made in 1862 by the sculptor Esterlehner and the painter Gutsch of Vienna.
The interior was repainted in the early 20th century by Dimitrie Turcu and later by Ioachim Miloia. The church served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Caransebeș until the new cathedral was consecrated in 2010. In the square in front stand the busts of Bishop Ioan Popasu (1935) and Dr Iosif Iuliu Olariu (1936), both listed monuments.
