About the place
The Diocese of Caransebeș was founded in 1865, but for a long time the town had no new cathedral: St George's Church filled that role. The diocese was abolished in 1949 and restored in 1994. The foundation stone was laid in 1996, services began in the lower level in 2006, and Patriarch Daniel consecrated the cathedral on 12 September 2010. It is dedicated to the Resurrection and to the Prophet Elijah.
The iconostasis is carved in wood, and the bells were cast by the Hörz company of Ulm. The cathedral stands on the site of the former Franciscan cloister; the medievalist Adrian Andrei Rusu criticised the destruction of the ruins without prior archaeological research.
