About the place
The Franciscans took over an older church here, recorded around 1439, and in the first half of the 18th century built today's Baroque church (the list of monuments gives 1725). In 1788 it was set on fire by the Turks and the friary was dissolved by order of Emperor Joseph II; by 1792 church and cloister had been rebuilt. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, celebrated on 8 December.
Inside are oil paintings by the Viennese painter Gutsch, showing the Virgin Mary and Saints Martin and Leopold, and Stations of the Cross in terracotta. About 50 m away, on Revoluției Square, the foundations of a Romanesque-type church from the 13th–14th centuries, uncovered in 1988, lie in the open air.
