About the place

Tibiscum was first a Dacian settlement, then a Roman fort built during the Dacian Wars where the Timiș leaves the mountains. Under Hadrian its walls were rebuilt in stone. Its garrisons included Syrian archers from Palmyra and, from the early 160s, a cohort of a thousand men. A civil town grew beside the fort and was raised to the rank of municipium, probably under Septimius Severus.

The archaeological reserve covers about 17 hectares and was created on the initiative of the Caransebeș museum; the first on-site archaeological exhibition opened in 1980. You can see stretches of the defences, the fort's main gate and the foundations of buildings from the fort and the town. The România Atractivă programme put up new information panels here in 2026.
